Cub boom camp - by Avalon

May 28th, 2007

Cub boom camp was based on boomerang work. Boomerangs are achievement badges that cubs do – there’s bronze silver and gold & if you do them all you work on your grey wolf award which not many people get. I’m working on my grey wolf and this report is part of it.

Cub boom was the very first camp that was based on boomerang work. It took 2h to get there. We got there at dark. We got there a little bit late so the tents were all ready set up. At the morning we woke up and had breakfast which we had a choice of weetbix, rice bubbles and corn flakes. Then we went to open parade at the top of a small hill. There were lots of bases from 1 to 15. We went to each base in our own groups. There was 15 groups from all over NSW. There was all ways a group at each base. My favorite was the flying fox and then the cooking station.
The most fun thing about going to camp was that you get to meet uther cub scouts.
So if you wont a great time come and see us at Brunswick heads.

Brunswick Cub Scouts in the news

The cubs land care activities have made the news. Check out the articles in the Echo and the Byron Shire News. There are some great pictures!

Cubs get involved with land care

May 1st, 2007

In the last week of the Easter holidays our Cubs Scouts undertook a range of hands-on Landcare activities which earned them their Gardeners Badge (level 1) and started them on their special interest Landcare badge.
Under the watchful eye of local trainer and bush regenerator, Mark Evans, and members of Brunswick Dunecare group, enthusiastic cubs removed environmental weeds near the Scout Hall.

They also planted native trees and shrubs in the adjacent dunes

and commenced propagating native plants from seed, including Matrush, Dianella, Midyim and Coastal wattle.

“As a former cub myself, I would have loved the opportunity to look after our natural environment as this is where we spend so much of our time” says Mark.

Mean while mums and dads and a team of wonderful community members were involved in the working bee to give the Scout hall a fabulous face lift. We all celebrated with a sausage sizzle.

Great turn out for Anzac Day dawn service

April 28th, 2007

There was a great turn out for the dawn service on Anzac day and twelve of the 1st Brunswick cubs joined in the march behind the Australian Scouting flag. Avalon and Hayley were the flag bearers and Dylan and Jaime placed our offering of a book on the memorial.

The cubs really enjoyed the pancake breakfast provided by the wonderful ladies at the RSL.
